Travel To Notting Hill Carnival

Here you will find all the information you need to travel to and around London as well as all you need to know when travelling to Notting Hill Carnival over the bank holiday weekend.

How To Get To London

You can travel to London by air or by sea. Most major airlines fly into London. The two main airports are London Heathrow and London Gatwick.


The currency of London is the British Pound.

London Weather

London has the reputation of always having rainy weather. However you’d be surprised the weather is usually nice and sunny on Notting Hill Carnival weekend. So put those rain macs away!

Entry Requirements

You may need a Visa to visit London. Please visit the UK Border Agency website to see if you need to apply for one before travelling.

Driving Around London

To drive in London you will need a valid international driver’s permit. In London traffic moves on the left side. London has a great network of roads which covers the entire city.

Public Transport

London has one of the largest urban transport networks in the world, with tube, train, bus, river and road systems.

London Buses

The London big red buses are iconic. They run frequently, are quick, convenient and a cheap way to travel around London, with lots of sightseeing opportunities en route.

London Tube

London’s Underground rail network, is normally the quickest and easiest way of travelling around London.

River Bus

Avoid the hustle and bustle on the London roads and take in the views of London by travelling by river.

Overground Trains

Use London’s Overground train to travel around London and beyond the Tube.


Trams run in certain parts of South London between Wimbledon, Croydon, Beckenham and New Addington.

Travel Carnival Sunday and Monday

London Underground

During high customer peak times some stations near Notting Hill Carnival may close temporarily in order to prevent overcrowding.

  • Ladbroke Grove will be closed on 24 and 25 August
  • Latimer Road will be closed at 23:30 on 24 and 25 August
  • Notting Hill Gate will be exit only between 12:00 and 19:00 on 24 and 25 August. Circle and District line trains will not stop at this station between 12:00 and 19:00 on 24 August and all day on 25 August. There will be no interchange between the Central line and Circle or District lines
  • Royal Oak will be exit only between 11:00 and 18:00 on 24 and 25 August. The station will close on both days at 18:00
  • Westbourne Park will be exit only between 11:00 and 18:00 on 24 and 25 August and will close both days at 23:30
  • There will be no service on the Waterloo & City line on Sunday 24 August and Monday 25 August.

If you plan on attended Carnival it is advised to consider using alternative stations to get to the event if possible.

London Buses

There will be additional buses that go directly to Notting Hill Carnival, however they will not enter the Carnival area from the first bus on Sunday morning until the first bus on Tuesday morning. Please also be aware they will not stop at every regular stop.

The following will going to Notting Hill Carnival (Buses marked with an X area the dedicated Carnival buses): 2X, 6, 7, 16, 18, 23, 27, 28, 31, 36, 36X, 46, 52, 70, 94, 98, 148, 159, 187, 205, 205X, 220, 228, 295, 316, 328, 332, 390, 414, 436, 436X, 452, N7, N16, N18, N28, N31 N98 and N207.

London Overground

The nearest London Overground stations to Notting Hill Carnival are Willesden Junction, Kensal Rise, Queen’s Park and Shepherd’s Bush. On Sunday 24 August on the Highbury & Islington to West Croydon/ Clapham Junction route, there will be no service between Highbury & Islington and Shadwell and also no service between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction. On Bank Holiday Monday the 25th August, a Saturday service will be in operation on all routes.

Road Closures

Many roads will be closed during Notting Hill Carnival weekend. Closure times will be from Sunday 24 – Tuesday 26. Road closures will be from Harrow Road in the north, Notting Hill Gate in the south, Clarendon Road in the west and Queensway in the east. It is advised not to drive to Notting Hill Carnival, but take public transport (Plus we’re sure you want to have a little rum!).
